Azdean chatted live on-location with Khalil in this recent Destination Morocco podcast episode, check it out to hear the full-length conversation! At Destination Morocco, we delight in uncovering the hidden gems and stories of this beautiful country. In a recent episode, we had the pleasure of introducing you to a remarkable tour guide based in Casablanca, Mr. Khalil Nejjari. Khalil has not only left a lasting impact on those who have met him but has also defied all odds as a blind tour guide, still working and guiding tourists on a regular basis.
How Khalil is Able to Conduct his ToursOur conversation with Khalil began at the entrance hall of the mosque's complex, where visitors can purchase tickets and explore a small museum showcasing the mosque's construction materials. Khalil's impeccable memory allows him to describe, with intricate detail, the features of the mosque and its surroundings. From the materials used to the long and inspiring journey of its construction, Khalil's insights truly bring the mosque to life.
As we walked through the massive courtyard towards the mosque's entrance, Khalil shares anecdotes about the history of Casablanca and its global influence. He outlines a typical tour of the city, which includes visits to famous and significant sites such as La Corniche, the Anfa district, the Habbous Quarter, and Mohamed V Square. Khalil's comprehensive knowledge of Casablanca makes him an invaluable guide for anyone wanting to explore the city's rich heritage.
Khalil's Journey as a Local GuideOf course we wanted to know more about Khalil and his personal background. Many travellers and Destination Morocco clients have had the pleasure of meeting him in person and have likely wondered about his story. After completing his studies in Morocco, he furthered his education in London and became a qualified travel and tourism professional. He then returned to Morocco and, in 1988, obtained his professional guiding license. For over 35 years, Khalil has been a national guide, showcasing the beauty of various Moroccan cities.
However, in 2018, Khalil's life took an unexpected turn when he started experiencing problems with his eyes. Sadly, it was too late for medical intervention, and he gradually lost his sight. Despite this challenge, Khalil remains passionate about his work as a guide. While he has limited his tours to Casablanca and the Hassan II Mosque, his knowledge of the city is unparalleled. Khalil is accompanied by family members or trusted individuals who assist him during tours, ensuring a seamless experience for visitors.
Appreciating CasablancaWe extend our sincere appreciation to Mr. Khalil Nejjary for his time, insights, and dedication to preserving Casablanca's heritage. As we've talked about from time to time on the podcast, Casablanca is often largely bypassed in travellers' itineraries so that they have more time in other famous, and perhaps more picturesque, locations and attractions. But despite the hustle and bustle, the traffic, the noise, the industry and busy port activities, Casablanca still has its own charm and a lot of influential history. At the very least, a city tour with a guide such as Khalil will give you a good appreciation for Morocco's biggest city.
